The NDR Fixed Income Allocation Strategy entered the month with elevated allocations to U.S. Treasurys and U.S. Investment Grade. U.S. Long-Term Treasurys’ is significantly above benchmark. None of the sector’s indicators are bearish. The U.S. Investment Grade Corporate bond sector’s allocation continues to be overweight, as there was indicator improvement.

The term “scapegoat” comes from a ritual described in Leviticus, where a goat was symbolically burdened with the sins of the people and sent into the wilderness, supposedly taking with it the community’s collective guilt. It’s handy that people have an antipathy toward goats: “scapekittens” or “scapepuppies” just wouldn’t work as well. Over time, the term evolved to describe individuals or groups unfairly blamed for problems they didn’t cause. A “fall guy”, by contrast, is someone who takes the blame knowingly or is set up to absorb consequences for others, usually as part of a calculated strategy. Thoughts From the Divide: Attribution

In April of last year, Huw Pill caught flack for saying that Brits “need to accept that they’re worse off”. This was followed by John Authers coming to the defense of the pilloried BoE chief economist. As we wrote, Authers noted that the comments were taken out of context and explained that the BoE’s Chief Economist was describing how “after a few external shocks, inflation becomes a collective action problem” where “ideally everyone would take a share of the hit, and then they can move on. Human nature isn’t like that, and as a result, economics isn’t like that”. Now, roughly a year later, the BoE’s Catherine Mann has picked up Mr. Authers’ baton.
