The NDR Fixed Income Allocation Strategy entered the month with elevated allocations to U.S. Treasurys and U.S. Investment Grade. U.S. Long-Term Treasurys’ is significantly above benchmark. None of the sector’s indicators are bearish. The U.S. Investment Grade Corporate bond sector’s allocation continues to be overweight, as there was indicator improvement.

European investors now own 15% of US stocks, whilst they have reduced EURUSD and GBPUSD hedges over the past 4 years, as any risk aversion from lower US equities has driven EURUSD lower - being underhedged counterbalances US equity returns. However, this did not work last Summer and the USD has been notably weak during the recent equity sell-off (see full discussion overleaf). With this correlation reversed, we note that European investors now find themselves underhedged their US equity exposure. It has been a volatile month for FX however the USD held key levels and recovered from the lows as US trade policy has become more measured.  The longer-term risks remain for USD, as the Administration attempts to rebalance the US economy, whilst positioning is structurally long USD. Thoughts From the Divide – Lessons Learned

If the saying is that we’re always fighting the last war, Chair Powell and his Fed comrades appear to be shellshocked. Not so long ago, when asked about where the FOMC’s collective thinking was, Mr Powell went with the rather cumbersome formulation “not thinking about thinking about” rate hikes. This time around, when asked about the various ins and outs of potential rate cuts, Powell said point blank that “the next question… is when it will become appropriate to begin dialing back the amount of policy restraint that’s in place… that’s really the next question, and that’s what people are thinking about and talking about”.
