MI2 Partners

When asked for his thoughts on Tesla Inc., whose stock Chanos has previously shorted, he drew on the Cisco parallel once again. “There’s always one stock in every bull market that has that, at least that imprimatur of, I call it hopes and dreams,” he said. “Everyone can really project their hopes and dreams onto that company and then value it any way they want. And Cisco was that company, by the way, in ’99. And [now] it’s undoubtedly Tesla.” “You could see Elon robbing a Brinks truck with a mask on or whatever [and people would say] ‘Oh, that’s Elon. I’m sure they’re going to have a new business of robbing Brinks trucks. And we’ll put a trillion [dollar] valuation on that,” he said.

Thoughts From The Divide: Relatively Speaking

BY JON WEBB
In the second half of last year, as we continued to ponder the ever-impressive strength of the US consumer, we highlighted research on the subject of “excess” saving (which still seems a misnomer), noting JPM’s analysis that saw the consumer that had exhausted the various stimmy payments. Soon after, we discussed research from the San Francisco Fed that argued “a larger fraction of aggregate savings remains in the economy than previously expected”, thanks in part to “a comprehensive data revision”. As ever with economic research, this comes with a list of caveats, the jist of which are captured in the note accompanying the Fed’s chart below, i.e. savings are gone, relatively speaking. Thoughts From The Divide: The Undead

BY JON WEBB
“Why is it people got so incensed about the reason why inflation might be happening?” Happy Halloween! Tis the season for ghouls, gremlins and zombies, so perhaps we should not be so surprised that even President Biden has gained a taste for flesh! (Though it’s not the first time?) We kid of course, but one might be forgiven for suspecting “Irish Alzheimer’s”, given the latest “garbage” gaffe/misstep. Of course, Trump is not one to miss an opportunity. This comes at an inopportune time as the election heats up with various election-related stories battling for headlines. Voter fraud! Early voting shenanigans! Election market manipulation! Some might joke that POTUS himself would be hard to pick out among the ranks of the undead (we would never stoop so low …), but the more intriguing zombie speculation is the election. It wouldn’t be the first time the lawyers have found ways to keep the monster alive. This got us thinking about the economic issues which just refuse to give up the ghost and have yet to be settled: “undead” topics that just won’t die! Read more →
