Whither US Treasuries?

BY JON WEBB
US growth dynamics remain stronger than many expected. The Federal Reserve seem hell bent on cutting rates but are getting cold comfort from recent data releases, however they attempt to spin it. Recent “off-message” comments from Fed officials underline that risk. If we continue in this vein, expect US rates to ratchet higher and bonds to remain vulnerable. Read more →

Thoughts From The Divide: The Moon

BY JON WEBB
If the Fed can “only know” the neutral rate (and hence whether policy is restrictive) “by its works”… there may be reason to think that the music is still playing. Whether it’s the price surges of misspelled celebrity memecoins ICOs such as “Joram Poowel” (a coin based on Elizabeth Warren was the “Top gainer” at the time of writing), the return of the Manufacturing PMI to positive territory “for the first time in 17 months”, or the simple good old fashioned break out of gold to all-time highs (sympathy to all mining stock bros, miners have failed to attract the same level of enthusiasm), the “restrictive” territory being bandied about seems less of a place of economic pain, and more one of milk and honey. Thoughts From The Divide: Particularly Fluid

BY JON WEBB
Now a week out from the Fed making it clear that the squeeze of lower growth isn’t worth the juice of bringing inflation back to (not toward, Jerry!) 2%, Mohamed El-Erian summed up the state of play nicely in a recent article for the FT. The Queens’ College president noted that, “It is not often that you see a reputable central bank revise up its inflation and growth projections and yet strengthen a dovish tilt to its policy stance. Yet that is what happened in Washington last week when the Federal Reserve raised those projections up a notch and yet delivered two consequential signals – a willingness to tolerate higher inflation for longer and an openness to slow the ongoing reduction in its balance sheet.” Read more →

Thoughts From The Divide: Strength in Numbers

BY JON WEBB
The rest of the world isn’t quite experiencing the same economic momentum as the US (the latest S&P Flash PMI noted that “input costs rose at the fastest pace in six months, while firms increased their selling prices to the largest extent since April last year”), making cuts a more palatable choice, but we feel for the Fed, who wants to be the odd man out? Thoughts From The Divide: Regrets

BY JON WEBB
With the Fed in blackout, the market has been left to its own devices to digest this week’s onslaught of economic data. The inflation data was particularly indigestible. CPI numbers came in hotter than expectations, with both Core and Headline higher than forecasts on a YoY basis at 3.8% and 3.2%, respectively: only slightly worse than expected, but worse than expected. The market also had to deal with PPI that was substantially hotter than expected: the month on month came in at 0.6%, double the consensus forecast. Under the surface, goods inflation appeared to once again be rearing its head, accounting for “about two-thirds of the rise in the headline PPI”, courtesy of “a 1.2% surge in goods prices, the biggest increase since August 2023”. (The Houthis are not helping). While the Fed may have taken a temporary vow of silence, Yellen is under no such constraint. Speaking in an interview on Fox, the Treasury secretary said, “I regret saying it, [inflation,] was transitory”, following up with the jab that “I think transitory means a few weeks or months to most people” (how long is a piece of string? To be fair, predicting inflation is, apparently, tricky: “there are clear limitations to how far into the future we can forecast inflation”). Read more →

Thoughts From the Divide: Attribution

BY JON WEBB
In April of last year, Huw Pill caught flack for saying that Brits “need to accept that they’re worse off”. This was followed by John Authers coming to the defense of the pilloried BoE chief economist. As we wrote, Authers noted that the comments were taken out of context and explained that the BoE’s Chief Economist was describing how “after a few external shocks, inflation becomes a collective action problem” where “ideally everyone would take a share of the hit, and then they can move on. Human nature isn’t like that, and as a result, economics isn’t like that”. Now, roughly a year later, the BoE’s Catherine Mann has picked up Mr. Authers’ baton. It turns out that people who can maintain their standard of living will tend to do just that! Bemoaning the “challenge” of bringing inflation back to target, Mann said there was “a lack of consumer discipline” to rein in businesses’ pricing power, Read more →

Thoughts From the Divide: Avoiding the Inverse

BY JON WEBB
Along with the release of the January Fed minutes this week, there was a deluge of Fed Speak, with Jefferson, Harker, Waller, and Cook all opining on the outlook for cuts. Most of the refrain was along the lines of Powell’s need for “confidence”, with Waller saying that he needed “to see at least another couple more months of inflation data” and Cook echoing the idea, saying that “as we gain greater confidence that disinflation is ongoing and sustainable, that changing outlook will warrant a change in the policy rate”. Harker pushed back on immediate cuts, asking for markets to “just give us a couple of meetings”, following up by saying, “I would caution anyone from looking for it right now and right away”. But while there may be some pushback on timing, that cuts are coming appears to be very much fait accompli in the mind of the Fed. Read more →

Thoughts From the Divide:  Tremendous

BY JON WEBB
While there is likely some argument within the Administration as to whether supply chain shocks are both necessary and sufficient or simply necessary (mirrored by the Fed’s own divergence in views), it’s clear that Yellen and the White House are not too concerned about the Philips Curve, nor seem to put stock in John Cochrane’s “fiscal theory of the price level”. After all, Yellen is still quoted as saying that the US is on a responsible fiscal path, despite the deficit (which is, as Mosler notes, the public’s surplus). Or perhaps they think that with some proper cajoling, the greedflation genie can be put back in the bottle (at least temporarily) as CEO’s find a renewed sense of civic virtue and community? We wouldn’t hold our breath. Read more →

MI2 for C8 – The FX Year Ahead – Turning Japanese – Feb 2024

BY JON WEBB
Japan is likely to come into increasing focus this year. With bond yields now being allowed to rise as the BoJ’s Yield Curve Control experiment comes to an end, the BoJ’s roadmap to ending NIRP (if things go to plan), the multi-decade underperformance of Japanese equities still fresh in asset allocators’ minds (despite some promising upside momentum) and a chronically weak currency, (especially on a real effective, inflation-adjusted trade-weighted basis), there is plenty of potential for disruption. Thoughts From The Divide: Hold On Tight

BY JON WEBB
“It’s obvious that there’s going to be stress and losses”. The comment is from Janet Yellen’s comments this week and comes from the discussion of the ongoing CRE dumpster fire. Stress and losses aside, the Treasury Secretary was unruffled, following up with the comment, “I hope and believe that this will not end up being a systemic risk to the banking system.” Yellen did admit that size matters. While “The exposure of the largest banks is quite low,… there may be smaller banks that are stressed by these developments” Read more →

Thoughts From the Divide:  Subjest to Change

BY JON WEBB
As the saying goes, “needs must when the devil drives”. We have no problem understanding the Fed’s decision to announce (at 7pm last night) that the details of the BTFP program needed to be altered. The problem was the overly juicy arbitrage, whereby banks could use the BTFP window to flip cash from the Fed into the RRP and pocket the not-insubstantial difference. We were impressed by the chutzpah involved in arbitraging two Fed facilities! Read more →

Thoughts From the Divide:  The First Cut

BY JON WEBB
In love, the first cut may be the deepest (as per Rod Stewart, Sheryl Crow, and others). But for the Fed’s Waller, the first cut is to be done “methodically and carefully”. Tacky musical references aside, the Fed Governor explained in his speech earlier this week that “the data we have received the last few months is allowing the Committee to consider cutting the policy rate in 2024”. With inflation seemingly on the right path for reaching the FOMC’s “price-stability goal”, Waller was yet another confirmation of the adjustment cut thesis, explaining in his conclusion, “The healthy state of the economy provides the flexibility to lower the (nominal) policy rate to keep the real policy rate at an appropriate level of tightness.” Read more →

Thoughts From The Divide: Signs of Life

BY JON WEBB
For those of us who regularly follow the “wonksphere” on social media, it’s been hard to ignore the pushback against the doom and gloom that economic sentiment surveys have consistently reported. Commentators like Stancil and Sahm have bitterly complained about the disconnect between the public’s negative perceptions relative to the hard economic data, which is ostensibly pretty good. In this, they have been carrying water for policymakers like Lael Brainard, who have attempted to burnish the Administration’s economic achievements to push back against the negative perception of the economy. The most obvious of those achievements is the decline in inflation – see, we told you it was transitory! Read more →

Thoughts From The Divide: Danger to Itself

BY JON WEBB
In an op-ed for MSNBC, the “former Federal Reserve economist” warned against the Fed keeping “interest rates too high for too long”, which would cause it to “fail at its job” and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Sahm argues that the economy is “on course” for a soft landing, but “Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell is not flying the plane, despite the popular narrative” (which is a far kinder metaphor than Jay being a toddler in the back seat with a toy steering wheel). Sahm suggests that “giving the Fed credit means we could learn the wrong lesson”. Read more →

Thoughts From The Divide: Identifying Ducks

BY JON WEBB
While we may have missed getting out our Thoughts From The Divide year-in-review piece before the new year (mea maxima culpa), we did manage to spend some time going through our “best of” and “greatest hits” in anticipation of the changing of the calendar. As usual, there were some repeated themes and tropes, but at the highest level, what struck us was that last year seemed very much governed by the timeless question from the underrated philosopher of science, Whitney Houston: “How will I know?” (closely followed by her observation that “crack is whack”) Read more →

Thoughts From the Divide – Lessons Learned

BY JON WEBB
If the saying is that we’re always fighting the last war, Chair Powell and his Fed comrades appear to be shellshocked. Not so long ago, when asked about where the FOMC’s collective thinking was, Mr Powell went with the rather cumbersome formulation “not thinking about thinking about” rate hikes. This time around, when asked about the various ins and outs of potential rate cuts, Powell said point blank that “the next question… is when it will become appropriate to begin dialing back the amount of policy restraint that’s in place… that’s really the next question, and that’s what people are thinking about and talking about”. Thoughts From The Divide: Adjustments

BY JON WEBB
Last week’s excitement in bond markets came courtesy of Governor Waller offering a mechanical rationale for rate cuts. Simply, “If inflation goes down, you would lower the policy rate.” This came, of course, in the context of warnings about financial conditions and other caveats, but as is so often the case, what the markets heard was “so you’re telling me there’s a chance?”. That doesn’t mean that we disagree with the market’s read of where the Fed’s head is. Fed Governors don’t make too many boo-boos with their messaging, and when they do, it’s often an error of timing rather than content. The market has now priced cuts down to “around 4% by the end of 2024” and while that seems perhaps overdoing the enthusiasm a tad, we suspect that the market has gotten the gist about right.  Read more →

USD Pivot Lower in 2024 – MI2 for C8

BY JON WEBB
MI2 currently has a bias for cyclical USD weakness as we progress into 2024, but this weakness could easily morph into an environment of secular USD decline. The early signs of USD weakness are falling into place, and with the current complacent consensus of stable FX relationships within the G4, the risk is building for a decisive break from the prevailing regime. Below, we segment our analysis to line up our skittles for a consensus-busting weak USD impulse. Read more →

The strategy aims to optimize risk-adjusted returns by dynamically-adjusting portfolios based on changing macroeconomic conditions. Taking three of our Global Macro contributers (including MI2), combining using our proprietary Tactical Asset Allocation, would have produced a 24% annual gain with 11% volatility and, notably, a 40% negative correlation to the S&P over the past two years. C8 Weekly Bulletin:  Trend-following in Volatile Times – the C8 Way

BY JON WEBB
The first quarter of 2023 has been notable for its skittish financial markets. First, there was optimism that this year would prove calmer than 2022, followed by renewed concern about inflation and the impact of bond holdings in the US banking system. This culminated in the forced takeover of Credit Suisse at the weekend.  Traditional trend-following strategies performed strongly in 2022, but these rapid shifts in sentiment have proved more difficult to navigate. The SocGen CTA index is down 6% year-to-date, and down nearly 10% in the past week.    Here is the good news!  The C8 Global Active Futures index avoided this sell-off and remains up on the year.  Why the difference?  C8's proprietary allocation process selects from a wide range of trend and counter-trend strategies, and is responsive to volatility levels, so adapts more readily to changing market environments. Central banks have had to act aggressively to contain inflation expectations - leading to an unwinding of excess global liquidity and divergent responses across asset classes.  A return to "normal" financial markets, with less policy support for asset prices and higher market volatility.  In this context, there is also new investor interest in trend-following strategies that exploit diverging market dynamics. C8 Studio contains both high quality trend-following indices and innovative combination technology. Read more →

C8 Weekly Bulletin: The ExtractAlpha advantage

BY ROBERT MINIKIN
This week’s Bulletin is guest edited by one of C8's index contributors – ExtractAlpha. Their Smart Earnings Index leverages their proprietary US earnings and revenue forecasts - which both consistently outperform the Wall Street consensus. The Index is a highly liquid strategy favouring large cap stocks and has delivered an annual return roughly 40% higher than that of the S&P500 over the past decade - and with similar volatility. C8 features in article: ‘Spotify investing’ threatens asset managers

This flexibility means [Direct Indexing] is the "next step" for investors, says Mattias Eriksson, founder and chief executive officer of C8 Technologies, a direct index solution provider.  "No one buys ready-mixed music CDs anymore when you have personalised playlists on Spotify [a music streaming service]. Probably we will see the same level of personalisation in the asset management industry," says Mr Eriksson. Read more →

A Comment on the April decline and some suggestions for what to do

BY JON WEBB
April was a poor month for equities. Global Market capitalisation based benchmarks declined 8%+ in US$ terms and approximately 3% in A$ terms as the A$ declined in a "risk-off" environment, as it usually does. Most countries and sectors declined. Evidence of rampant price inflation, suffered as usual by those least able to deal with it, are in almost every financial media article. What happens now? So where should we invest? Read more →

Delft – some-stuff-you-don’t-want-to-think-about-but-should

BY JON WEBB
And yet here we are, perhaps caused by years of unorthodox monetary policy, where many managers and clients perceive risk as irrelevant and an irritant? All focus is upon return – those ‘sexy’ growth stocks, that 10 bagger PE fund, that property that will inevitably benefit from a lick of paint or a change of use permission, and of course the free put option available to all investors that has been a feature of monetary policy in essentially the last 25 years. So we're going to bore you with a brief article on the independent variable known as risk. Return, the glamourous bit, is the dependent variable. No risk, no return. So, if you can’t define, measure, and manage risk then your returns are a function of luck. Not a lot of people know that. We spend a lot of time obsessing about risk especially in multi-asset portfolios, whose Alphas and Betas are both correlated at different extents at different times, and where they offer differing opportunities for active and passive approaches at different times. FOLIOBEYOND FIXED INCOME COMMENTARY FOR Q1 2022

BY JON WEBB
The historic adjustment that the fixed income market is undergoing is long overdue. Negative real rates, pent-up inflationary and labor market pressures, continued supply chain bottlenecks, and possible aggressive Fed tightening were bound to result in a massive reversal of the long-term bull market. While we have witnessed dramatic moves higher in interest rates during the first quarter of 2022, we believe this is likely to be the early innings of a more significant repricing of various asset classes until a temporary equilibrium is reached. Favour Needs not Wants?

C8 GBI Good Governance January 2022 Monthly Report – Cirdan Capital

BY JON WEBB
The ‘Good Governance’ certificate performed badly in January, particularly in the last week of the month, giving back December’s outsize gains, to end 6.6% lower on the month. There was no overriding theme, with the broad sector sell-off in US stocks, on rising expectations of US rate rises, also reflected in the ‘Good Governance’ portfolio.  Read more →

BY JON WEBB
The ‘Good Governance’ certificate closed out the year with a strong month, up 6.3% in December, to leave the certificate up 4.9% in 2021, and 10.7% since inception. Most notable was a rotation away from some of the more speculative (and less well-governed) stocks in the S&P 500 into our Good Governance portfolio, as year-end approached. Read more →

C8/GreenBlue Good Governance US Equity L/S Certificate – October 2021

BY JON WEBB
The ‘Good Governance’ certificate recovered some of last month’s losses in October, rising by 0.7%, as commodity markets stabilised, and in some cases, reversed their recent sharp gains.  High energy prices and post-Covid supply chain issues remain however, but, as we have previously expressed, we believe that the ‘Good Governance’ premia can perform well as these influences diminish over time. Choosing a Fixed Income Allocation with Portfolio Optimization

BY SARAH GRIECO
With inflation debated daily among investment professionals and media reporters, it is virtually impossible to predict interest rate movement or the economic landscape. Given that many retail investors focus on equity investments, choosing a fixed income allocation can be particularly difficult given the lack of accessible tools and models. As interest rates and inflation expectations evolve, a tactical rules-based approach to portfolio optimization can help provide investors with a flexible fixed income allocation in different scenarios. Income Opportunities: Offsetting Low Yields in a Portfolio

BY SARAH GRIECO
With many investments offering yields below historical averages, building an income portfolio today is not as easy as it used to be, and simply accepting lower yields may not satisfy investors’ needs. C8/Green Blue US Equity L/S Certificate 2027 – June 2021

BY JON WEBB
After a period of strong gains, the Good Governance Certificate gave back 3.2% in June. With oil and gas stocks excluded from our long basket on ESG grounds, the sharp recovery in these stocks (up 23% since the start of May) weighed on the overall performance. However, this underperformance is to be expected, given the ESG exclusions, when, for example, the oil price rises sharply. This leaves the Certificate up 2.6% in the first half of the year, and up 8.2% since inception. Read more →

Day Hagan/NDR Smart Sector® with Catastrophic Stop Strategy February 2021 Update

BY BRIAN SANBORN
Based on the February model update, the Day Hagan/Ned Davis Research Smart Sector® with Catastrophic Stop strategy remains fully invested. The NDR Catastrophic Stop model is based on the combination of two proprietary composites: 1) the Internal Composite (technical and price-related indicators) and 2) the External Composite (fundamental, economic, interest rate, and behavioral/sentiment indicators). Each composite is one-half of the overall score. This month's allocation to U.S. equities has an overweight on Information Technology and underweight for Consumer Staples. The sector allocations are determined using NDR's Sector Model, where each sector has sector-specific, weight-of-the-evidence composites of fundamental, economic, technical, and behavioral indicators to determine the sector’s probability of outperforming the S&P 500. Pegassets – EAM Blueprint for Rescuing Active Investment Mgt

BY JON WEBB
There have been innumerable papers written in recent years explaining why passive management is the heir apparent to traditional active management. This is not such a paper. Nor is this a paper urging patience because active management is on the cusp of reclaiming dominance. Without structural change, it cannot. In fact, pivotal data presented in this paper quantifies that evolutionary improvements will be insufficient to alter active management’s inferior position versus passive. Status quo has become a permanent trap for active managers. Read more →

C8 Monthly Update – The Next Step: Tactical Asset Allocation  – Sep 2020

BY JON WEBB
We have now released a new combination algorithm, Tactical Asset Allocation (TAA).  In this case, instead of using a Risk Parity weighting across our 5 ARP combinations, we determine what combination of indices would produce the most consistent performance.  In contrast to risk parity, which gives an equal risk-adjusted weight to each component of the portfolio, or mean variance, which always looks for the highest risk return, TAA  focuses consistency.  Read more →

Singapore’s legacy for the fourth generation of the People’s Action Party

BY DELFT PARTNERS
The recent election in Singapore provided a gentle reminder to the ruling People’s Action Party that their hold on power should not be taken for granted. Singapore has generated significant financial wealth to deal with the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic and plans are underway that will underpin the short term economic recovery as well as Singapore’s long term reputation for competitiveness and innovation. The local equity market remains small and has not reflected the broad economic success of the country, nevertheless, we are able to find excellent small to mid sized companies in Singapore to include in our Asian portfolio. The ‘Beginning of the End’, or the ‘End of the Beginning’?

BY DELFT PARTNERS
Summary: After a strong rebound in risk assets and some signs of a relaxation of the lock downs, we are now entering ‘phase 2’. The actual damage done will become clear and fears about a viral resurgence are likely. Consequently, we expect a sideways market for a few months. Long term returns are unlikely to be impaired however, although a temptation to unleash modern monetary theory would be alarming. Japan remains our favourite equity market. Read more →

Germany – The best house on a poor street?

BY JON WEBB

Global Security Fund Monthly Report March 2020

BY JON WEBB
The revaluation of risk premiums we saw in February escalated in March, leading to further declines in the world's stock markets and a sharp rise in the US dollar. Central bank efforts in combination with large rescue packages from all directions helped calm the markets, which has led to stock markets recovering significantly in recent weeks. Shares have largely been sold across the board, which also affected the Global Security Fund, which declined by 12.9 percent. Read more →

C8/GreenBlue Good Governance US Equity L/S Certificate up 3.4% in March

BY JON WEBB
As we detailed last month, when C8’s systematic factor-weighted equity L/S overlay was applied to the Green Blue Invest portfolio of the top 100 ‘Good Governance’ stocks in the S&P 500, one of the stand-outs from the backtest was the strong performance of the Index in volatile markets. We also noted the outperformance of the Certificate in February, which was even more marked in March, where the Certificate rose 3.4% against a 12.4% drop in the S&P 500. Indeed, a better measure of the outperformance may be that, since launch, the S&P 500 has fallen by nearly 22%, whilst the Certificate has risen by 0.5%, despite a 40% long bias. Read more →

C8/GreenBlue Good Governance US Equity L/S Certificate February Report

BY JON WEBB
In the first Monthly Report for the C8/GreenBlue Good Governance US Equity L/S Certificate we focus on the large out-performance of the Certificate versus the S&P 500. One of the standout attributes in the backtest is that, whilst our Index typically performs well in equity bull markets, importantly it tends to outperform the S&P in volatile/bear markets, as capital heads to the safety of ‘well run’ companies. The last few weeks has been the first live test of this thesis, and we are pleased that this has indeed, so far, occurred.  At Friday’s close, the Certificate is up 1.2% since inception on January 21st, despite having a 40% long bias and the S&P500 dropping nearly 10%.   Read more →
